Fall Collective

annabelle-2.mp3annabelle-2.mp3For my piece I went in several different directions this semester.  I would have something I liked when I started and would ditch it and start something new.  Right now I have put together a rock piece with a drum sample I found online.  I had a basic chord progression and messed around with different keyboard sounds and effects.  I have also been recording a lot of acoustic demos myself this semester one of which I have added on this page called Annabelle.  This was the first semester I did most of the recording at my house which has helped me to better understand the equipment and recording process.

Well since I do not have the ability to post directly to this blog, here goes. This semester I have been experimenting with sound design. For my piece I laid out a pattern that consisted of a drone with a few dissonant melodic pieces thrown in randomly every other few measures just to keep things interesting. I created this using fruityloops with some simple sequencing. I then through it all into ableton live and that’s where things got interesting. With ableton’s “simpler,” I was given the ability to automate parts of a wav such as loop points start times end times, as well as all the normal stuff like filters and freqs. But by being able to automate loop points and control them at will throughout a piece. It really allows the user to create some very very interesting sounds. For my piece, i chose to take a sound and begin with it already somewhat disfigured from its original context. I then messed with it trying out different things here and there until finally at the end i would reveal the original sound.

for my next semester piece i am going to try to create a much more pop sounding tune and try to use these same elements on the vocal live of the track by cutting up different lines, exporting them as wavs, and then editing them with ableton. My main fear is that the tempo will not permit me to achieve this since automating loop points pretty much removes any ability to keep a sense of rhythm.
